the fiscal cliff, we need a bigger plan because it does not even balance the budget. i don't think we really have a supply-side problem. they talk about cutting taxes on the right and i think there are so many people out of work and i think you need to get these people to work. i just think we have a demand issue, not a supply issue. if you're out of work, you cannot pay taxes. guest: he is exactly right -- no one is talking about a fiscal cliff that will solve the problem. there is no grand bargain being discussed except in the most general outline terms. there is enough to be -- nothing close to being politically acceptable. we're only talking of something of that will allow people to get through this. in the short term, we need to have fiscal policy that may get the deficit higher than what it would be. ben bernanke was saying the deficit could be cut too far and too fast at the same time. this has to be the time where we don't go into an austerity program. we are not quite there. if businesses are spending and consumers are spending and trade was helping, i would say that is the right ti

, with some news, the latest on the rapidly approaching fiscal cliff deadline and what appears to be a stalemate in the negotiationses. in his first interview since the election president obama reiterated his demand that any deal must raise taxes on the highest earners. but yesterday the president also appeared to showroom for flexibility on lowering those tax rates in the future. >> i don't think that the issue right now has to do with sitting in a room. the issue right now that's relevant is the acknowledgement that if we're going to raise revenues that are sufficient to balance with the very tough cuts that we've already made and further reforms entitlements i'm prepared to make that we're going to have to see the rates on the top 2% go up, and we're not going to be able to get a deal without it. what i suggest is let's essentially put a down payment on taxes. let's let tax rates on the upper income folks go up. and then let's set up a process with a time certain end of 2013 or the fall of 2013 where we work on tax reform. we look at what loopholes and deductions both democr

a call after both traded fiscal cliff proposals. neither sealed a deal, so we're now 20 days away from almost $500 billion this automatic tax hikes and spending cuts. i sound like a broken record. along with the potential for a new recession. shannon travis is following the deal make. do we know what was in the proposals? >> we're getting details in drips and drabs. the white house has offered according to a source telling cnn to basically revise their revenue target. p president obama originally proposed $1.6 trillion in new revenue. he wants to raise the tax rates on the wealthiest americans. now we're being told that he's revised that number down to $1.4 trillion. that's obviously a difference of $200 billion. a democratic aide also telling cnn, i'll read the quote, that offer was coupled with a serious spending cut number with real entitlement reform. so that's from the white house side. on the counterproposal from the republicans, we don't have a lot of details on that, but from boehner's office, republicans are basically awaiting spending cut specifics from the white house. meanw
